可能是因为我看了Life of Pi吧。

Considered to be one of the greatest tragedies written by Shakespeare,
Hamlet
involves both internal and external conflicts. However, unlike other stories whose drama and climax are usually associate with external events, it is Hamlet’s internal conflicts that endow the play with the sense of excitement, drama and climax.
The main source of Hamlet’s internal struggle is his procrastination to kill Claudius, which is rooted deeply in his subconsciousness, giving the play the overall sense of drama. Initially, his pain is caused by the death of his father and his mother’s hasty marriage. It soon turns into internal struggle after he is told by the ghost of Old Hamlet that Claudius is the murderer. While he is full of hatred for Claudius, he is not willing to take actions against Claudius blindly because he is suspicious that the ghost might be “a devil” that “abuses [him] to damn” him “out of [his] weakness and [his] melancholy.” However, from his second soliloquy, which is given after he watches the actors performing “The Mobled Queen”, it can be detected that the uncertainty about the identity of the ghost is only the ostensible reason that he doesn’t act. Throughout the soliloquy, he angrily blames himself for being “the son of a dear father murdered, prompted to [his] revenge by heaven and hell” yet “unpregnant of [his] cause, and can say nothing” for the king “whose property and most dear life” is taken away by the “remorseless, treacherous, lecherous, kindless villain.” Although he has devised the “mousetrap” play to “catch the conscience of the king” and thus to assure the righteousness of his cause, it is obvious that deep inside his subconsciousness, he has already been firmly convinced that what the ghost says is true. From this perspective, his suspicion seems only to be one of the many excuses made unconsciously that aim to ease his internal conflict temporarily, though he might not notice. Therefore, he is essentially battling inwardly with his subconsciousness, which tries to escape the reality and thus causes his procrastination. Because his character has already been shaped by his past experience, it is almost impossible to change. Thus, Hamlet’s internal conflict, in which he is trying to win against an invincible enemy, his subconsciousness, is fundamental to the sense of drama of the play.
The dichotomy of life and death is the main conflict that contributes to his procrastination. Hamlet contemplates suicide even in the very beginning of the play. Left alone at the wedding scene of Claudius and Gertrude, he wishes that his “too too solid flesh would melt, thaw and resolve itself into a dew” and that “the Everlasting had not fix’d His canon ‘gainst self-slaughter” because suicide see***ike a liberation from this “weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable” world. This theme is evident throughout the rest of the play. In his “To be or not to be” soliloquy, he questions “whether ‘tis nobler” to “suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune” or to “take arms against a sea of troubles”. If death can “end the heartache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to”, then it is “a consummation devoutly to be wished”. However, according to Hamlet, although people can make their “quietus with a bare bodkin”, they still choose to “bear the whips and scorns of time” and to “grunt and sweat under a weary life” because ”the dread of something after death, the undiscovered country from whose bourn not traveler returns puzzles the will”. It is the unknown world that makes people “cowards” and “lose the name of action”. Therefore, to Hamlet, life itself is an internal struggle, subject to either won or lost.
The fact that his conflict is eventually resolved by his instinct rather than reason, significantly accentuates the drama of the play. Due to his internal conflict, Hamlet does not take actions unless his life is at stake, since under such circumstance human instinct is over the “craven scruple of thinking”. Although he kills Polonius, who is thought
to be the king, this act can only be carried out at this very moment that Hamlet has to take actions immediately because Polonius is crying out for help. After witnessing Fortinbras’ army is going to fight for a land that has not actual value, Hamlet is inspired and resolves his dilemma: “rightly to be great is not to stir without great argument, but greatly to find quarrel in a straw when honor’s at the stake.” He finally determines to take actions by saying that “from this time forth”, his “thoughts be bloody or be nothing worth”. Yet he still procrastinates. It is not until the very last moment, when he knows his mother is poisoned to death and his own death is approaching, does he eventually take actions and kill Claudius. It is his instinct that drives him to react, not his reason. Even until this crucial moment, he still cannot extricate himself from the influence of his subconsciousness. Nonetheless, since the external conflict is resolved, there is no longer necessary for him to battle inwardly. Therefore, Hamlet’s death is a perfect way to end the play, ultimately reconciling both of the external and internal conflicts.
Although the outward conflict in the end of the play marks the climax, the central conflict begins internally within Hamlet’s mind and crescendos to the outbreak of the physical antagonism, which finally results in his own death and makes him a tragic hero. Therefore, the overall sense of drama of the play is reliant on Hamlet’s internal struggle, in which he tries to prevail against his subconsciousness, an almost invincible enemy.
Hi, Mr. Bernard,
I feel really sorry for turning this in so late.. I had the same problem as Hamlet does. Obviously my subconsciousness, which drives me to escape the harsh reality, prevails. Sorry about that...
